Bill Joy changed the stdio library on the VAX and Tom Ferrin (at UCSF) ported those changes to the PDP-11. Ferrin also rewrote parts of copyseg() and clearseg(). (The entire set of improvements was made available to the community on a PDP-11 distribution: 2.8.1BSD
