The MySpace Unix Team operates a collection of over 1,700 servers spread across four data centers nationwide. Among the responsibilities are content storage and delivery for Rich Media (including images, video, and music) and infrastructure support for Linux resources utilized by various departments and business units. The environment is growing at an astounding rate, and the server count is expected to exceed 2,300 by year end.

The Unix Engineering group is responsible for building scalable storage solutions, high performance web services, operational automation tools, and much more through extensive utilization of cutting-edge commercial and open source technologies.

As a systems engineer, you will be responsible for assisting with the infrastructure design and systems architecture, the build-out of new projects and systems, and solving difficult issues unique to large-scale environments. The goal of Unix Engineering group is to build easily maintainable systems leading to a highly available, high-performance environment.

Responsibilities:

• Work with other engineers and architects in designing the architecture of next-generation systems
• Find and implement new ways of improving and managing our existing architecture
• Troubleshoot and resolve difficult production issues in a timely fashion
• Periodic on-call duty
• Escalation support for operational teams

Qualifications:

• BS in CS or equivalent experience
• 5+ years experience with Linux administration
• 2+ years experience with systems architecture
• Excellent ability to learn and think on your feet
• Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills
• In-depth Knowledge of Linux internals. Experience with RedHat or CentOS is preferred
• Expertise in profiling and troubleshooting running applications
• Knowledge of common network protocols and their associated servers (NFS, HTTP, SMTP, NTP, etc.)
• Knowledge of networking (Netmasks, CIDR notation, etc.)
• Excellent communications skills, both oral and written
• Previous experience in a large scale Internet-related or other high-availability environment preferred.
• Strong scripting knowledge (Bash, Perl, Python, PHP)
